Negotiaion Update

Kaolin Workers’ Union is currently in the middle of our contract renegotiation and we need your support!

Kaolin Mushroom Farms/Southmill Mushrooms are trying to eliminate many of the benefits that the union has won in the past. Proposed changes include:

Eliminating the Company’s guaranteed contribution of 25 cents for every dollar that workers place in their retirement fund.
Decreasing vacation time. The Company wants to decrease paid time off by 20%!
Refusing to guarantee other benefits. The Company is refusing to guarantee a subsidy to health insurance plans and life insurance plans provided to worker.
Furthermore, If the Company is required by law to provide either health insurance, life insurance, or short term disability insurance, the Company is demanding an exemption from federal and state law.

We are in the process of writing a petition that our supporters will be able to sign in support of Kaolin Workers Union. We will be posting the link as soon as possible.

La Unión de Trabajadores de Kaolin sigue con el proceso de negociaciones. Mientras parece que hemos ganado poquito, la compañía esta intentando de hacer unos cambios económicos que son extremos y inmorales.

La compañía quiere bajar los días de vacaciones de los miembros de la Unión 20 por ciento de lo que llevamos ahorita, no quiere garantizar que la compañía va a dar una contribución de 25 centavos por cada dólar que un trabajador pone en su plan de retiro, y quieren quitar el garantizo de contribución para un plan de salud.

La Compañía esta pidiendo una excepción de cualquier ley federal o al nivel del estado que obliga a la compañía ofrecer beneficios de salud, de seguro de vida, seguro para gente debilitada.

No dejan que quitan los derechos de los trabajadores de Kaolin. Apóyanos para que mantengamos nuestros derechos!

We are a small, independent union of mostly immigrant mushrooms workers in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. We represent workers at Kaolin Mushroom Farms, and work closely with a non-profit, the Farmworkers Support Committee, to fight for farmworkers rights in the mushroom industry in Chester County, PA.

We want to begin documenting the struggle of farmworkers in Chester County. It is our hope that this blog will act as a medium to share our story with the wider community and farmworker supporters everywhere.
